Big cash boost for life-saving Bognor Regis alarm scheme

A life-saving project in the Bognor Regis area has received a £2,500 boost from councillors.

The cash from parish, district and county council members will pay for firefighters to install 100 automatic early warning alarms in the homes of vulnerable residents around the town.

West Sussex County Council Fire and Rescue Service is unique in the country in offering this protection.

The alarms are connected to the emergency alert systems, which vulnerable people have in their homes.

In the event of a fire, the alarms automatically send a signal to the alert system control centre, which immediately phones fire crews with the location of the blaze.

The cash was given by Joint Western Arun Area Committee through the county council's community initiative fund.

Mike Coleman, who is chairman of the committee's county council members, said: "The community initiative fund aims to help a wide range of community groups.
