I have wondered many times these past weeks how my parents could afford the tickets. My abiding memory of the opening ceremony is of the children being invited down to the track side to open the baskets from which hundreds of doves flew. I am the very proud daughter of an Olympian, Jack Hambidge, a member of Birchfield Harriers, who represented England at the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928. He ran in the 100 yds and 200 yds and was beaten in his heat by Percy Williams, from Canada, who won the gold medal. I still have my father’s kit, including his Panama hat and blazer badge.
