Those of you that are growing pumpkins for the Pumpkin competition should be observing how the plants are growing. It is a good idea to start off with three pumpkins per plant, but choose the one which is growing the best and remove the others. Nutrients to the plant come from the soil, so by increasing the roots, the plant will benefit. This is done by layering the stalks and easily done by putting some soil over a convenient stalk and weighing it down with a brick or such like. Roots will develop and benefit the plant. Don’t forget to apply some liquid fertilizer to both the main roots and these subsidiary roots once they have developed. This will also develop the leaves that are needed for photosynthesis.
