HUNDREDS of young runners from across Worthing, Arun and Adur braved icy temperatures to race in the annual schools cross-country event.
Around 650 boys and girls from 12 schools gathered at the frosty Gallops in Findon on the morning of Novermber 22, watched by hundreds of cheering families and friends.

Thomas A'Becket Middle School, in Glebeside Avenue, dominated the day with team victory in all eight races, including an event record in the year four boys event.

And other local schools celebrated some fantastic individual successes.
India Spoor, 11, in her final year at The Vale First and Middle School, completed a clean sweep of victories in the event, winning her fourth race in four years.

She believed the freezing temperatures actually helped her to victory, saying: "The weather was fine. I quite like running when it's cold."

Hannah Buckthorpe, from The Orchards, in Nelson Road, Goring, kept on track to repeat India's record next year when she claimed her third win in three years, winning the year six girls race.

Bintu Freeman, also from The Orchards, won the year five girls race.
The victory eased the heartbreak from last year's event when she was leading in the final straight, before twisting her ankle in a rabbit hole yards from the line and failing to finish.

Thomas A'Becket boys, who won every single individual boy race, were Ed Taylor (year four), Sam Hyde (year five), Luke Featherston (year six) and Sam Murray (year seven).

Pupils from Worthing High School helped marshal the event, which organiser Elle Ford said was "a great success".
